Emily Carr

Today we are going to share with you the contributions of one of the most important people in Canadian history! A West Coast artist who has been described as “Canada’s Van Gogh.” Born in Victoria, Emily Carr began with few advantages. She studied art in San Francisco, London, and Paris while struggling to fund her education. Embracing the new modernist style, she came home in 1911 and applied her new skills to her favourite subjects — West Coast rain forests
and the villages and artifacts of indigenous peoples. However, Canadian critics and buyers were not ready for her work and she abandoned painting for fifteen years. It wasn’t until the National Gallery mounted an exhibition of West Coast art in 1927 that she received the attention she deserved. By the time of her death she enjoyed international renown that has outlasted that of her contemporaries.

Nellie McClung

Nellie McClung was a motivational Canadian feminist. She fought for women’s rights. With 4 other activists, she had a powerful impact on Canada and it’s voting system. Nellie McClung was also one of the “Famous 5,” a group of female activists.  In 1927, the five activists petitioned the Supreme Court to have women declared “qualified persons” who were eligible for public office as senators. Before Nellie McClung, women were not allowed to vote in Canada but she was influential in forcing the government to allow women to vote.  Thank you
to Nellie McClung for recognizing that men and women should be treated equally.

Canada's 150th Birthday

Sir John A. Macdonald was born in Scotland; when he was a boy his family immigrated to Kingston in the colony of Upper Canada.  He was the first prime minister of Canada.  He had a political career which spanned almost half a century.  Without his wit and determination, Canada would not exist today.  His efforts to join Ontario and British Columbia with a railroad forced the Americans to stay put and not bother us.  Although he was not perfect and made some controversial decisions there was no doubt that he was dedicated to Canada and wanted our country to succeed.  Our country is successful today.  Thank you Sir John A. Macdonald for your contributions.
